Holiday shopping on Amazon can be tricky to interpret. A few years ago, it bragged about the Kindle Fire being a huge seller, but in terms of actual market share, the Kindle Fire is tiny. Also, Kindle Fire sales spiked during the holiday then fell in the next quarter.
Next I bought three of my books myself through the Amazon website and when I still saw no sales on my author page, and questioned them again, they stated again that there had been no sales. Now if this fishy I don`t know what is.

The MacBook Pro is, simply put, a beautiful computer. It has incredible performance, a perfect build and design, yet still delivers 7 hours of battery life. The entry level version falls into this pricing category but, if you are flexible on price and are looking for more storage or performance, you have the option of upgrading a few of the internal components. Along similar lines, if your product is selling a steady one unit per day, but some of your competitors start to sell more than you, then your rank will fall (i.e. the number will get higher), even if your sales remain steady.
Give your VPCs out to friends and family in exchange for reviews/sales metrics. This is also an awesome hack, which most of our clients use with great success. You can set up a VPC and discount your product down to your total costs (so you’re not taking a loss on each sale, but breaking even). Then give this VPC out to friends and family, and have them buy it through Amazon on their own. Most people will be ecstatic to receive such a deeply discounted product, and you’ll get a ‘Verified Purchase’ review – as well as a boost in your initial sales data!

This is a fantastic list to motivate current and new sellers. It is well thought out, detailed and well presented. Well done! Amazon do get bad press time to time. What most sellers forget is that Amazon only charges on the sale of the item. Unlike Ebay or PPC where it is a pure gamble unless you know what you are doing. I would however add caution to ensure offline and other sales channels are also utilised and not rely 100% on Amazon sales.
Turns out, there’s a 100% free tool that does exactly that – it’s the KTD Amazon Keyword Tool. When you enter a keyword, it automatically queries Amazon’s search box for all the long-tail Search Suggestions for your keyword + each letter of the alphabet.
So in the spirit of offering you the same expert advice I’d give to my nearest and dearest, I’ve combed through the best-selling budget-laptop lists from both Amazon and Best Buy, and weighed the pros and cons, taking into account the various configurations and specs. Both lists change quite rapidly, so I’m basing this on a snapshot in time—namely, the best-selling laptops on the morning of November 7, 2017.
I suspected that I was not alone in my obsession. There are even sites like Sales Rank Express and Novel Rank that aim to cull tracking for authors, domestically and internationally. So, I reached out to two novelist buddies with new books out and asked about their relationship to the ranking system. Was I the only crazy one? “In one instance, I knew that 10 copies of [my book] were going to be purchased on Amazon,” explains Jennifer Miller, author of debut novel The Year of The Gadfly (out since May 8). “Out of curiosity, I checked the ranking before and after the sale. To my surprise, the ranking temporarily got worse. It’s a mystery!” She also reports fluctuations in one day from 100,000 to 7,000 and says that, according to her publisher, early sales information suggests that the book is selling best at independent bookstores. Wait, independent bookstores actually sell books? I thought they were a dying breed, almost as elusive as unicorns? Turns out that they still play an important role, thank goodness.
Thanks for the great comments, Ed! It’s difficult to say just how useful this tanking actually is- whether it’s more for vanity, or whether it actually has some real bearing on revenue and sales etc, but it’s interesting to look at it in more detail though 🙂
Conny, I’m not sure, to be honest. Perhaps something to do with angorythm changes? Or simply your relation to others in your category, which can naturally change without your sales changing at all… so, if the sales in 50% of your category are fluctuating (which they are), this will naturally change your relative rank, even if your sales stay the same (even at 0)… In all, though, it’s impossible to tell for sure. Please let me know if you find out anything else!
Lousy Sales Ranks: This isn’t always or necessarily indicative of a bad-buy item, but only if you do it right. If you’re smart about it, like avoiding items with tons of competing offers, then you have the chance to make nice cushy profits. Just make sure you’re backing it with something like a Buy Box to increase your chances of a tidy profit.
