The screenshot in your main article shows that Amazon treats paid and free sales differently – they are actually different bestseller lists. They used to be published side by side, with the top-selling free book in a category to the left of the top-selling paid book, but as your screenshot shows, they are now different pages.

Here are the top 500 sellers on the Amazon.ca marketplace. The feedback shown is only that received from sales on the Canadian marketplace. The feedback data will vary from that in the global list above, for merchants selling to other North American marketplaces using the same account.
This is my method for buying on Amazon (eBay in disguise), eBay, Abes: ask questions before sale about packing, when product will really be sent, do they provide tracking, have they described condition, what is their feedback like (go back and see how many people are dissatisfied each day for a month or so…tedious, but if you have people every day saying you screwed up, something’s wrong), do they respond to emails and do they answer the questions asked?
While it isn’t clear exactly how many copies of a book must be sold to break into a slot on the list, a 2013 study of Amazon’s best-sellers list for a two-week period by Publishers Weekly found that “a title in Amazon’s top five averages 1,094 print copies sold across all channels, including other retailers, on a typical day.”
If you’re an Individual Seller with a Pro Merchant account, a Professional Seller or a Vendor, then you can use Amazon’s built-in promotion tools. The savviest of shoppers always make use of Amazon’s daily deals.
At one point 5 books where up in the Adult Colouring Books and 2 in Stress Management. I’ve still done no marketing. Then a couple dropped out of the Colouring Books but not too low that they can’t come back into the Bestsellers later. I have one left in the Stress Management. The other books I have are about 170s mark so with a bit of work might get into the Bestsellers.
Hi Hutch, thanks for your comment. Do you have a link to a specific article which shows this? I agree that free vs paid has a massive bearing on movers/shakers, top 100 etc, but for the sales rank, the vast majority of data I’ve seen and experienced supports that the weighting between free and paid for this specific list is pretty equal- would love to see some quality evidence for the contraty though, and if I’m wrong, will be happy to change the article…
First, let’s take some time to review known Buy Box metrics. They can basically be grouped into three categories. For reference, you can see the first page of sellers for the kettlebell listing above, shown to your right.
If we dissect this URL, it’s easy to see that the &field-keywords= string is what Amazon uses to ID which search results to show. The /s/?url=search-alias is how Amazon tells itself to query a search results page, automatically sorted by best-sellers.
By 2021, Amazon is expected to take at least half of all online sales. The company has built out its e-commerce dominance mainly from selling tons of items at cheaper prices — and with faster delivery — than its competitors. That means the products, and how many of them it sells, are very important to the company.
Two weeks ago, if someone had asked me for my number, I would have barely resisted the urge to wink lasciviously at my own reflection and quip something super-lame to my husband Andrew about lucky he was to have such a hot wife.
So every time a customer checks out a product, they have a section directly underneath the product description showing related products that make nice complements to the product currently being considered.
One of the top sellers you see in the list above is WayFair. As I was poking around Amazon, I noticed them showing up a ton in our searches. They have over 200,000 reviews and this seller clearly knows what they’re doing… Just about every item in their shop is winning its Buy Box. Getting Amazon reviews has to become systematic to generate sales.

The best-selling office products in the U.S. were Elmer’s Liquid School Glue (1 Gallon) – Great For Making Slime, Georgia-Pacific Spectrum Standard 92 Multipurpose Paper (8.5 x 11 Inches) and Paper Mate Flair Felt Tip Pens (Assorted Colors, 12-Count).
Because of the high bar, the term “bestselling author” was a term with some meaning. It was seen as something that was earned through a lot of hard work. But today, that designation has changed—for the worse. It’s like when you see a food described as “natural.” The FDA doesn’t actually regulate that term, so it’s basically meaningless.
Rankings there are determined by book sales reported to The Times by retailers across the country, the Times’ methodology states. But, there is “no exact number” of sales that will land you on the list, according to a representative for The Times.
Hi Lola! Thanks for your comment. I’m getting this section (free vs paid) of the aricle changed, so this is made clearer- as mentioned in a previous comment, it seems the weightings are the same, but the lists are different…. Thanks for the heads up. I took a look at all of this in more detail and reaslised I needed to clarify this in the text., so hopefully those edits will be online soon!
As you can probably guess, some sellers have developed a blackhat form of ASIN piggybacking. Basically, it involves finding knockoffs of popular products and listing them with the same ASIN as their non-knockoff counterparts.
(Publisher: Ubisoft) — Ubisoft lands a one-two punch at the top of the midyear sales list with this hack-and-slash fighting game that pitted Vikings against samurais against knights. While the multiplayer elements faced some criticism, fans appreciated that the game rewarded patience, rather than letting people simply mash buttons on their controller randomly and still win fights.
Every computer enthusiast knows the conversation—the one you get from friends or family: “Hey, I need to buy a new laptop. What do you think of this Acer so-and-so? Or should I get this Dell that costs $50 less? They seem pretty similar.”

Amazon also stated that 60 percent of holiday sales were made from a mobile device. Purchases made using gadgets were especially brisk on Cyber Monday, as Amazon sold 18 toys per second, via mobile devices. This indicates shoppers are moving away from the computer and grabbing the phone or tablet to shop online instead.
Let me just point out, from personal experience, that the figures posted by Regan on how many sales we can expect a book to be achieving, depending on its overall sales rank are only good for amazon.com or english titles. Smaller markets (for instance french language books, or italian language books like mine) will have much lower sales for a certain ranking
Thanks for the great comments, Ed! It’s difficult to say just how useful this tanking actually is- whether it’s more for vanity, or whether it actually has some real bearing on revenue and sales etc, but it’s interesting to look at it in more detail though 🙂
