With the 2017 holiday shopping season now firmly behind us, Amazon has a lot to smile about. Earlier today, the online retailing giant issued a press release noting that the 2017 holiday shopping season was its biggest yet. In addition to a record number of online orders, Amazon relays that it saw significant gains to its Prime membership, noting that it saw more than 4 million new Prime subscribers in one week alone.
Whether you need gift ideas for your nephew’s birthday or just looking to treat yourself, this list will come in handy. From Cards Against Humanity and Chrissy Teigen’s new cookbook to Gillette razors and water filters, all ages and interests should be covered. It gets better from there, too: the RAM is upgradeable to 32GB, meaning for just over $100 you can turn this thing into a heavy-hitting machine that can handle multi-tasking with ease. It’s also got two USB 3.0 ports and a USB-C connector for fast data transfer, an optical drive if you need one of those, and fast 802.11ac wireless.
“I bought this in December 2013 and I use it daily as the extra storage for my music and photos in my phone (currently an Xperia Z5C). No performance issues at all. I do really recommend this micro SD card.” – Paco Hernandez, Amazon reviewer
The only title that’s in the top 5 both in print and Kindle is The Handmaid’s Tale, a dystopian novel from Margaret Atwood, first published in 1985. The book is set in the near future, in a militarized society where women are brutally subjugated.
You’ll find Top 20 Print Bestsellers of 2017 So Far in the table below. As you see, all of the titles are Prime-eligible. It means that if you are an Amazon Prime subscriber living in the US, you can get any of these books shipped for free.
Amazon has unified its European marketplaces in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. That means a single seller account can be used to sell on all of those marketplaces. Feedback is tied to a single seller ID for sellers using unified accounts, so it’s possible to report on the proportion of feedback they have gained from each European marketplace. You can see that breakdown in the table below.

Amazon also stated that 60 percent of holiday sales were made from a mobile device. Purchases made using gadgets were especially brisk on Cyber Monday, as Amazon sold 18 toys per second, via mobile devices. This indicates shoppers are moving away from the computer and grabbing the phone or tablet to shop online instead.
Amazon uses multiple selling accounts of its own, such as Warehouse Deals, Digital Services, Quidsi, The Book Depository, Cloudtail (a joint venture) and Amazon Media. Selling accounts that could be identified as belonging to Amazon have been excluded.
I’m a partner at a marketing company called Brass Check. Over the years, we’ve helped launch 30 legitimate New York Times best sellers (including several at the sought-after No. 1 spot). My company has helped sell over 5 million books and advised or managed book launches with every major publishing house, including Amazon.

The actual way Amazon does calculate the Overall ranking though is a trade secret, so this is relying on reverse engineering changes seen after getting sales jumps/or doing free giveaways. And apparently there is also a dlooars per sale weighting in there, as in some cases fewer sales of a higher dollar book can push you up more than a lot of sales for a 0.99 book. Lastly, I am sure that Amazon reviews trends for this very closely and tweaks / adjusts their algorithims frequently to help guard against people gaming the system to their detriment.
It’s worth noting, too, that Prime Day 2017 technically started early this year — at 9 PM ET on Monday night. Plus, the sales event has expanded to 13 countries worldwide this year, up from 10 in 2016, which also translates to increased sales. While the U.K. and Germany were both in the Prime Day lineup last year, the Echo had yet to expand to those markets (it came only in September 2016): that too will have translated to a bump.

As you can see, this section of Amazon’s website is almost a department unto itself. Promotions are given their own unique links and listing pages. The part I’d like to draw your attention to is the Coupons link, highlighted in the blue box above. This page takes you to a list of Amazon’s most popular Vendor Powered Coupons (VPC) in a variety of categories. See the page for yourself below:
From what I understand, this can sometimes be because a product is new, or that they just haven’t had any recent sales, so they simply don’t rank against other products in that category… hope this helps!
I didn’t write this to make my foot famous. I wrote this post because I’m tired of vanity titles and success without quality. I also wanted to show how simple it is to call yourself a best-selling author, in the hopes that people buying books become more discerning customers. Remember, if I can make my foot a “bestselling author” for under 3 dollars and a few minutes of work, you should take any person presenting themselves as such with a grain of salt.
Promote VPCs just like you’d promote any other Amazon product listing. Coupon pages have their own independent sales rank. So, if you’re a new seller or trying to compete in a tough niche, you may be able to get more eyes on your product by promoting a coupon for it instead of the listing itself.
Recent sales alone are not all that’s taken into account. Amazon also has predictive features built into the Bestsellers Rank, which are likely to be based on historical data of a product. This is how a newly released book can have a higher ranking than a book released three years ago, even when the latter has more cumulative sales- Amazon can predict that the new release will overtake that book in a given period of time.
“The scale is very accurate. I stepped on and off multiple times, and always got the same number. Then I put on a light jacket, stepped on again, and it was up .6 pounds. Perfect!” – Elizabeth, Amazon reviewer
In December 2013 Theresa Regan posted the following on her blog representing how many sales we can expect a book to be achieving, depending on its overall sales rank. Of course, these numbers are likely to be rather arbitrary, but they’re interesting nonetheless. Note, these numbers do not apply to product categories other than books. It’s also important to mention again that it’s the sales that cause the ranking. The ranking doesn’t cause the sales.
The popularity of ASUS laptops on Amazon’s Top 100 bestselling list has decreased a little bit if compared to 2017 taking about 15% from best-selling laptop computers list in 2018 In this article I’ve listed…
Every computer enthusiast knows the conversation—the one you get from friends or family: “Hey, I need to buy a new laptop. What do you think of this Acer so-and-so? Or should I get this Dell that costs $50 less? They seem pretty similar.”
Amazon UK best sellers in top electronics & photo categories including : film, flashes, keyboards, lamps, laptops, monitors, projectors, scanners, smartwatches, speakers, tablets, tvs, video, wireless headphones and much more…
If we dissect this URL, it’s easy to see that the &field-keywords= string is what Amazon uses to ID which search results to show. The /s/?url=search-alias is how Amazon tells itself to query a search results page, automatically sorted by best-sellers.
Sadly Amazon is not available in Australia, not for buyers or sellers, only Amazon books….even though Australia is one of the highest online purchasing population there is, but I guess Ebay isn’t complaining.
Amazon does not provide a seller directory for every category in every country in which they have a marketplace. There’s quite a lot of variation but Amazon.com specifically does not list sellers of books, DVDs/Blu-rays and CDs. (As an aside, even when there are seller directories some of the top sellers are missing.)
