Hi JT, as mentioned in the article, it’s based on recent sales relative to other books in the same category. By selling a copy, your rank will overtake thousands of other books instantly. If you sell 3 books in a short period, that’ll overtake a lot more books. If you sell hundreds of books in a single day, you could well jump to #1, but as your sales decline, other books will overtake you pretty easily. If you want to keep that rank, you have to maintain a good number of steady sales pretty much day in day out…
There are plenty of other bestseller lists and rankings which you can base your book buying decision on, but Amazon’s Bestsellers Rank is by far one of the most cited. As mentioned at the start of the article, though, it’s difficult to pin the Amazon Bestsellers Rank down too firmly, but the above is what I’ve dissected from plenty of research online. People will disagree to an extent with some of the above, but the importance you place on ranking algorithm is up to you. I don’t know how (or even if at all) this ranking impacts buyer decision, but I hope you’ve found this interesting.
(Publisher: Activision Blizzard) — “Infinite Warfare” was a troubled “Call of Duty” title from the moment it made its debut, with fans blasting the debut trailer for deviating too far from the franchise’s roots. That reaction has seemingly impacted catalog sales. Typically, the previous year’s “COD” game is at or near the top of the midyear sales list. This year it’s near the bottom. Activision hopes this year’s “Call of Duty: WWII” gets a warmer reaction.
Hutch, thanks for your reply, and thanks for the email you sent me! I’ve took another look at all of this, and want to thank you for pointing this out. I’m getting that section of the article clarified now, so it’s clearer that free and paid have separate besterller ranks, however the rankings seem to be calculated in the same way (or very similar).
Their warehouse packers at the warehouses some sellers I guess send their product into so the seller does not have to ship the product themselves will throw product into a big box with no padding to take up the extra room (I had an MP3 player come in a box that was about 14″ x 20″x 12 inches high with no padding what so ever, it was so damaged by flouncing around in a huge box that it look like it had been thrown against a wall many times). Again, try sending it back for a refund.
(Publisher: Ubisoft) — Ubisoft lands a one-two punch at the top of the midyear sales list with this hack-and-slash fighting game that pitted Vikings against samurais against knights. While the multiplayer elements faced some criticism, fans appreciated that the game rewarded patience, rather than letting people simply mash buttons on their controller randomly and still win fights.
Overall, Internet Retailer is estimating that Amazon will top $2 billion in Prime Day sales this year, or a 20 percent jump over Prime Day 2016. Our source is more bullish and said he wouldn’t be surprised if sales, powered by keen interest in Alexa-based hardware, jump 40 percent.
We’re only halfway through 2017 right now so there’s plenty of time for another item to top Amazon’s electronics list. But if the past few years are any indication, the company may be on track for another year of having the best-selling item.
For plenty of power, plus room to multitask, study and play, the Satellite L655 laptop is a great choice, with its famous Toshiba quality, value and style, and a generous 15.6 diagonal TruBrite HD display. This larger screen is great for doing more things … more info
This is a fantastic list to motivate current and new sellers. It is well thought out, detailed and well presented. Well done! Amazon do get bad press time to time. What most sellers forget is that Amazon only charges on the sale of the item. Unlike Ebay or PPC where it is a pure gamble unless you know what you are doing. I would however add caution to ensure offline and other sales channels are also utilised and not rely 100% on Amazon sales.
Selling on Amazon doesn’t have to be intimidating, even if you’re a new seller. It’s the largest e-Commerce platform in the world, and now you have all the tools you need to make the most of it. But in the end, nothing beats getting your hands dirty and actually putting these Amazon ranking hacks to work!
“I still absolutely LOVE my Kindle Keyboard and use it almost every day. I have read dozens of books on it. I like the newer models, they have some neat features, but the experience of reading a book on them is no better or worse than on my Kindle Keyboard.” – Ron Cronovich, Amazon reviewer

Rankings for this midyear list were taken from sales figures from January through the end of April, the most recent reporting period for market researcher The NPD Group. Due to agreements with publishers, NPD does not publicly release hard sales numbers — but the rankings show that players are eager for new experiences — while they’re not quite ready to let go of some old favorites.
Success! Just a reminder to the kids that if you work hard, own an iPhone with a working camera, and have no shame, you too can be a #1 best-selling author. What a thrill to see that #1 Bestseller banner! Time to put Drake on repeat and update my LinkedIn profile to include #1 Best Selling Author.
The opposite holds true, too, where your competitors can suddenly out-rank you in the Amazon best sellers rank. This usually happens if you’ve been selling at roughly the same rate each day, and one of them enjoys a considerable (and relative) spike on one day.

A recent report put out by RBC Capital estimates that there will be an installed-base of 128 million Alexa-powered devices (like the Echo speaker and Echo Dot) by 2020, and that they’ll become a $10 billion business that year. Those estimates are based on the assumption that Alexa-powered devices will increase spending by 5% to 15% for each Amazon customer.
Amazon has their own “bestseller” rankings for books, based upon categories. If you’re in the Top 100 in your Amazon category, you will see a “bestseller ranking” below the title. A book at the #1 spot in any given category will get a “#1 Best Seller” banner featured next to the title. This lets potential customers know the book is the top-selling item in that category. If a book holds the top spot in a category for months, that’s saying something. Hitting it for an hour (which is how often Amazon refreshes its rankings), screen-shotting it, and calling yourself a “bestselling author” for life? Well…
Sales ranking do influence people to click on a product just as positive reviews do also. If a book has a 1million rank savvy shoppers know its bombing and not very popular. Its like anything else in life…hype…hype…hype. use it to your advantage.
“This cable worked perfectly and it is made with high quality materials and the construction is good. It performed as well as the Apple cable, it is MFI certified and it sells for ½ of the price.” – JJCEO, Amazon reviewer
I haven’t personally checked out or reviewed this Windows laptop, but after reading many of the mostly positive user reviews on Amazon, it appears to be a great option for those who need an affordable, yet capable budget laptop.
Amazon has revealed its 100 best-selling video games of 2017. While the list encompasses all of the game-related products the online retailer sold throughout the past year, the actual list of best-selling games was dominated by Nintendo, which published seven of Amazon’s top 10 titles by platform in 2017.
Absolutely, it will overrate some and underrate others. However, it is comprehensive and transparent and, I believe, the best possible without making a lot of shaky assumptions on average feedback rates, sales prices etc. etc. So I prefer to keep it simple, and be upfront about the source of the data and its shortcomings.
