Across Amazon Books’ 13 bookstores, the top selling nonfiction book was Obama: An Intimate Portrait by Pete Souza; the top selling fiction book was Origin by Dan Brown; the top selling kids book was Diary of a Wimpy Kid #12, The Getaway by Jeff Kinney; and, the top selling poetry book was the sun and her flowers by Rumi Kaur.
Amazon has various ways of ranking products, but one of the least understood seems to be the Amazon Bestsellers Rank (also known simply as ‘Sales Rank’). This post will hopefully help you understand , as a customer, which books are selling well in a certain topic, and as a seller, which products may be your main competitors.
What this also means is that a book that’s ranked 800,000 can see it’s rankings skyrocket to 200,000 just with a couple of sales. As you move up the ladder, however, Amazon’s complex algorithm kicks in soon thereafter making it harder for you to break through the 100,000 milestone, and even harder to get past 10,000. This is because these higher rated products have historical data to back them up, so a lull in sales for them won’t result in as dramatic a drop in rankings as it would for a new product with less data to draw on. In all, the ranking seems to be somewhat logarithmic.
Amazon has their own “bestseller” rankings for books, based upon categories. If you’re in the Top 100 in your Amazon category, you will see a “bestseller ranking” below the title. A book at the #1 spot in any given category will get a “#1 Best Seller” banner featured next to the title. This lets potential customers know the book is the top-selling item in that category. If a book holds the top spot in a category for months, that’s saying something. Hitting it for an hour (which is how often Amazon refreshes its rankings), screen-shotting it, and calling yourself a “bestselling author” for life? Well…

“The scale is very accurate. I stepped on and off multiple times, and always got the same number. Then I put on a light jacket, stepped on again, and it was up .6 pounds. Perfect!” – Elizabeth, Amazon reviewer
Since customer reviews obviously affect sales, I guess that my question has to do with Sales Rank, so here it is: if a review is posted on my sales page in one Amazon store (e.g. UK or, say, Italy) will it automatically appear on all other Amazon sales pages for book, including Amazon.com?
This means that you can drive traffic to a product page using a custom URL and make Amazon think all those people came from a search result for your target keyword or brand. That way, every sale you make from that link counts toward that specific search term’s relevancy!
If you are interested in the product volume for just a few sellers you can click the links to their seller information pages on Amazon. The product widget there includes a page count which can be used to calculate how many products they have listed.
“This version of the Fire has a great screen display and looking at the technical specs Amazon made some major changes in the display/resolution, and the picture appears more crisp.” – Michael Gallagher, Amazon reviewer
Amazon has a massive retail operation that often sees big sales over the holiday season. A press release from the company confirms this year was no exception. Buried in all the information Amazon shared, was the nugget that the top three computers sold over the holiday were Chromebooks.
There’s some hefty grunt under the shell of this HP Laptop 15 and there are some great prices available as well. Even with the Intel Pentium processor and 4GB of RAM to start, this laptop will whip through pretty much any day-to-day activity you can throw at it without the juddering performance of even cheaper laptops. Hell, it’ll even have a decent crack at playing a few of the less demanding games out if you equip it with an Intel Core processor.
For comparison’s sake, Amazon Prime Day 2016 had led to a 3x increase in Amazon device sales, including a 2.5x increase in U.S. sales for its Echo speaker. It seems we’re on track to surpass those increases this year.

Turns out, there’s a 100% free tool that does exactly that – it’s the KTD Amazon Keyword Tool. When you enter a keyword, it automatically queries Amazon’s search box for all the long-tail Search Suggestions for your keyword + each letter of the alphabet.
Midyear sales figures for the video game industry show two things — the staying power of hot holiday sellers and which spring releases have found a loyal audience. While the positions shift (and many titles fall off the charts) once the holiday months arrive, they’re a good barometer of publisher health.
Those with a Kindle account frequently take advantage of downloading free e-books. Why do we mention this? Because when it comes to the best sellers rank, Amazon does not differentiate between free and not-free books.
There’s probably a lot of variance in the % of buyers who leave seller feedback. Amazon’s own statistic of 10%-20% does feel high though. I’m hoping to get data on it sometime and might be interesting to see if it varies by country, category etc.
The popular non-tech items to make it to the top 10 are books. Australian author Scott Pape’s The Barefoot Investor comes in at number seven and Jamie Oliver’s 5 Ingredients – Quick & Easy Food ranks as the eighth best-selling product in Australia.
But it’s begun to feel a bit like a losing battle. Because those authors are everywhere these days. The title of my fake book was “Putting My Foot Down” for a reason: I’ve become utterly exhausted with phony “authors” and the scam artists and charlatans who conspire with these folks–the cottage industry that has built up around them, selling courses, instructions and hacks. A quick Google search returns dozens of “bestselling books,” courses, packages, schools, secrets, summits, and webinars teaching you how to become a “bestselling author”. Hell, this guy even promises to show you how to be a bestselling author “Even if You Have No Book Ideas, Writing Skills, or Any Clue Where To Start” in a “5 Phase Formula.”
You’ll find Top 20 Print Bestsellers of 2017 So Far in the table below. As you see, all of the titles are Prime-eligible. It means that if you are an Amazon Prime subscriber living in the US, you can get any of these books shipped for free.
Lenovo has crafted a brilliant, forward-thinking device that could very well create a subcategory in computing all of its own. The modest specs hold it back from taking on the big boys in terms of raw power, but the innovative digital touchpad keyboard and drawing surface look like trendsetters to us. The Android version is currently about $100 cheaper than the Windows one (click “see all prices” above to see all options).
“I love my new Paperwhite Kindle. I’ve been using an aging keyboard Kindle 2, waiting for a version with a built-in light like this. Amazon really got it right with the light on this one.” – Chad Bush, Amazon reviewer
Amazon’s decision to deeply discount its voice-powered Echo devices for Prime Day appears to be paying off for the online retailer. Though Prime Day is still underway this afternoon, Amazon has already sold more Echo devices than it did on Prime Day last year, it says.
Let me just point out, from personal experience, that the figures posted by Regan on how many sales we can expect a book to be achieving, depending on its overall sales rank are only good for amazon.com or english titles. Smaller markets (for instance french language books, or italian language books like mine) will have much lower sales for a certain ranking

(NOTE – While lowering the price is certainly a good strategy to rank higher, it is not always a good long-term business strategy. You do NOT want to compete on price alone, as this will only start a price war/race to the bottom)
I think the variation in feedback rates is fascinating. Some sellers like Pete below do report up to 20% while others just get feedback on 2-3% of sales like you. It seems to vary by country, but I’m guessing product category, price and other factors also play a part.
As he said; do you use any feedback software? If you don’t.. I’d love to have you on-board with my company Feedbackz.com. I think you’d be quite impressed with getting those conversions even higher.. and we support all those international marketplaces as well. https://demo.feedbackz.com
As mentioned, all that counts is the number of sales relative to other products within the same category. Amazon splits ‘paid’ and ‘free’ books into separate categories, so these act as sub-sub categories, in turn having their own bestsellers rank, which seems to be ranked using the same (or very similar) algorithm to paid bestseller ranks.
