Great article! My book, “The Spider and the Wasp” (http://www.amazon.com/The-Spider-Wasp-Trauma-Survivor/dp/0991438310), will get down to about 2,600,000. I sell one and it jumps to about 450,000, and then drops back down to 2,600,000 over the course of a week. Last night it jumped to 225,000… so maybe I sold two in a day? Selling books is a tough thing to do. Wanting somebody to buy my book is like asking them to pay me for ten hours of their valuable time. I’m glad I didn’t go into it with any pre-conceived notions of success.

“If a book has cracked the top 100 and and particularly the top 20 and stays there — the duration is a huge part of it, if it stays there for a few days — that is generally a very strong sign that it is going to be a New York Times Best Seller and that it is going to start showing up on other lists,” Eisenmann says. “To hit that top slot is huge. A recent report put out by RBC Capital estimates that there will be an installed-base of 128 million Alexa-powered devices (like the Echo speaker and Echo Dot) by 2020, and that they’ll become a $10 billion business that year. Those estimates are based on the assumption that Alexa-powered devices will increase spending by 5% to 15% for each Amazon customer.
Google might want to enjoy Chromecast’s sales leadership while it lasts. In the future, would-be customers could get put off if the wait for more compatible apps and streaming sources drags on. Before long, Chromecast may also have a new challenger: Amazon’s rumored streaming gadget. Possibly dubbed the Firetube, the device will reportedly launch in time for the holiday season.

Games purchased digitally on consoles or at other retail outlets like GameStop, are not factored into the data. Amazon Japan’s seller directory only lists “top sellers” rather than all sellers. The same is true for the directories of book sellers in China and India. Amazon’s definition of top sellers is not known, so there might be sellers on Amazon Japan, or who only sell books in India or China, with higher feedback than those shown above.

When it comes to ranking highly on the Amazon Bestsellers lists, as the ranks are based hourly (or daily if the above information is correct), then a quick spike in sales due to a successful marketing campaign, followed by a lull in sales a couple of days later will only serve to see the product’s rankings quickly plummet. It’s far better to space out a product launch over a period of week, so Amazon can collect consistent historical data to make predictions on future sales. This will thereby make it easier for you to break into higher spots on the ranking table in future.

Very nicely broken down Steve! I def agree with you; from my experience (I run an app called Feedbackz and see/work with feedback/reviews all day long!) I see the same of the notion that.. it’s many, many factors associated with conversions.
We think the two sources together provide good coverage but it’s not going to be 100%. A seller that’s missing from the seller directories (or who only sells in categories without a directory) and does not have an offer for any of the top 100 best sellers won’t be on the list. A summary of the methodology is in the “About the Data” section at the end of the article, but in less detail because it gets pretty complex.
