So we supplemented data from the seller directories by looking at all sellers with an offer for any of the top 100 products in any of the top-level categories. (So they don’t have to be in the Buy Box for those products, they just need to have an offer at any price.)
From afar, this laptop might be mistaken for a MacBook Air, which tells you a lot about its level of quality. Replete with an all-metal frame, this is probably one of the best-looking laptops for under 500 bucks. There are plenty of ports (old and new), 4GB of RAM and up to 512GB in solid-state storage. The cheapest models have a respectable Intel Core i3 processor, but you can get the more powerful i5 versions if you need that extra kick. Another dig at Apple? Unlike the Air, this laptop sports a fully HD screen.
The listings shown to your right are a great example. Every seller on the first page has a 90% rating or above. However, you can see that a seller with a 90% rating ranks higher than a 100% rating. It seems that as long as you hit 90% positive feedback, anything extra won’t have a huge impact on the Buy Box.
The end of the year is full of book rankings and charts of all kinds. What about summertime? Amazon has two proven ways to find the books that are worth reading. You can jump to each list right from below:
If you are interested in the product volume for just a few sellers you can click the links to their seller information pages on Amazon. The product widget there includes a page count which can be used to calculate how many products they have listed.
Great article! My book, “The Spider and the Wasp” (http://www.amazon.com/The-Spider-Wasp-Trauma-Survivor/dp/0991438310), will get down to about 2,600,000. I sell one and it jumps to about 450,000, and then drops back down to 2,600,000 over the course of a week. Last night it jumped to 225,000… so maybe I sold two in a day? Selling books is a tough thing to do. Wanting somebody to buy my book is like asking them to pay me for ten hours of their valuable time. I’m glad I didn’t go into it with any pre-conceived notions of success.

With all the talk about Buy Boxes, you may think that’s the first thing sellers take notice of when deciding on a purchase. But as RepricerExpress is here to show you, there’s another heavily-weighted factor: the Best Sellers Rank.
We have important rules at my company about the projects we take on. We don’t work with authors whose books we wouldn’t read ourselves, and we don’t guarantee best-seller status. We say no to more work than we say yes to, but these principles help us avoid the gimmicky, one-hit-wonders who aren’t looking to write great books but instead are looking to trick people into thinking they have.
With that said; I’ve would have to give ballpark of around 5-7% for seller feedback (even worse conversions for product reviews) averaging the highs and lows of niches, marketplaces, product quality, etc. etc… high end is about 20-23%.
Across Amazon Books’ 13 bookstores, one out of seven customers who purchased a book also donated a children’s book to local charities supporting children in need. The top selling book given to local charities was the classic, Are You My Mother by P.D. Eastman; it was also the top selling book across all 13 stores.
Thanks for the great comments, Ed! It’s difficult to say just how useful this tanking actually is- whether it’s more for vanity, or whether it actually has some real bearing on revenue and sales etc, but it’s interesting to look at it in more detail though 🙂
As you can tell from the list above, the best selling games were a bit dominated by Nintendo, but a couple of PlayStation hits did crack into the top 5, as Horizon Zero Dawn and the ever popular Call of Duty: WWII sold well enough to give itself a spot on the best sellers of 2017. For a look back at Horizon Zero Dawn, make sure to check out our review of the game below:
Let me just point out, from personal experience, that the figures posted by Regan on how many sales we can expect a book to be achieving, depending on its overall sales rank are only good for amazon.com or english titles. Smaller markets (for instance french language books, or italian language books like mine) will have much lower sales for a certain ranking
Which book is on top of the print list? Dr. Seuss fans, time to celebrate! Oh, the Places You’ll Go! is the children’s classic parents keep buying for their kids. It was #5 print book bestseller in the list of Amazon Bestsellers of 2016.
Some high-feedback sellers are not present in Amazon’s seller directory, and the directory is not available at all for some media categories in some countries. Media covers books, DVDs and Blu-rays, music, PC and video games, and software. To address that, we have supplemented information from the seller directory with data on sellers who offer any of Amazon’s best selling products.
Lousy Sales Ranks: This isn’t always or necessarily indicative of a bad-buy item, but only if you do it right. If you’re smart about it, like avoiding items with tons of competing offers, then you have the chance to make nice cushy profits. Just make sure you’re backing it with something like a Buy Box to increase your chances of a tidy profit.
Oh, and then there are the ones who claim to have U.S. warehouses and even state they send from such and such a state…many of these are located overseas and your purchase takes up to three months to get.
You’re still in competition with other sellers for the same products. Using the example of books, let’s say you’re selling a first-edition copy of Tom and Huck along with nine other Amazon sellers. If all 10 of you sell one copy each of Tom and Huck within a couple hours of each other, you probably won’t see a jump in your Amazon sales rank. To get that spike for yourself, you have to out-sell the other first-edition copies of Tom and Huck so that your sales are higher than the other nine.
The only agreed upon fact that Amazon’s algorithm was a big fat secret. And, according to their information page, the ratings are actually updated hourly across the board, though the exact moment of update might depend on time zone. To get some perspective, I searched The Hunger Games in paperback and found that it was No. 7. Since my father-in-law kept making jokes about me passing Charles Dickens, I looked up Great Expectations in paperback too: No. 982. Just narrowly beaten out by the dildos.
I’m the Amazon sales manager at one of the companies listed above and can definitively say that the idea of 10-20% of transactions getting feedback has some limitations as an indicator for units sold.
It would be interesting to see Amazon’s own accounts to see how they rank against the rest of us… even if you list them with an asterisk… would they take the top four spots or is there a top seller 3rd party that does better than the host?
Free Downloaded ebooks do NOT count equally as a paid sale. They may have a loooong time ago when the Kindle Slect program first started but for at least the last year or longer even a free giveaway downloaded only counts for about one tenth of a paid sale in overall/sub-category rankings.
As mentioned, all that counts is the number of sales relative to other products within the same category. Amazon splits ‘paid’ and ‘free’ books into separate categories, so these act as sub-sub categories, in turn having their own bestsellers rank, which seems to be ranked using the same (or very similar) algorithm to paid bestseller ranks.
Whether you need gift ideas for your nephew’s birthday or just looking to treat yourself, this list will come in handy. From Cards Against Humanity and Chrissy Teigen’s new cookbook to Gillette razors and water filters, all ages and interests should be covered. The top purchases below are broken up by category, such as toys and games, electronics, books, clothing and beauty.
“There has been increased interest in this title over the last 72 hours, with the book sitting on the top of our Best Sellers lists for Books, Kindle Books, and Audible,” a representative from Amazon tells CNBC Make It Friday.
In a press release pushed out on December 26, to highlight its successes during the festive period, Amazon says it saw a big increase in the number of Prime trials being taken, a big bump in the number of people shopping from its mobile apps and, to sweeten the acerbic reception that greeted its ill-fated Fire Phone, big sales for its own-brand TV streaming devices.
