Note that not all sellers use unified accounts, and those who don’t aren’t easy to identify as cross-border merchants. Seller “dodax” is a good example of that, appearing in the top 10 for the UK, France and Italy – but using separate accounts on each.
Also, there are sellers above that are overseas, copy loose leaf and print on demand textbooks, they illegally copy to sell to U.S. students. Students wait months to get their textbooks and they come in as different editions (because they lie about them), loose leaf, or illegally printed (meaning they bought a book, made copies of it and sell the book).
While Google hasn’t yet opened up product distribution outside the U.S., earlier this week, Amazon indicated that it would ship the device to select international destinations. Shoppers in Europe, Asia and Australia reported success in ordering the device. But now, Amazon’s Chromecast product listing reads: “Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S. and to APO/FPO addresses.”
It gets better from there, too: the RAM is upgradeable to 32GB, meaning for just over $100 you can turn this thing into a heavy-hitting machine that can handle multi-tasking with ease. It’s also got two USB 3.0 ports and a USB-C connector for fast data transfer, an optical drive if you need one of those, and fast 802.11ac wireless.
Another thing is that even though their seller feedback rating might be stellar, you will see if you read back in their 40/50 feedbacks per day that negative feedback gets buries almost instantly (and funny…most the positive feedback after negative feedback will take a point or two of the negative feedback proceeding it and comment in the positive on those points.
To show you what’s going on behind the scenes when you use Amazon, let’s start by looking at the URL for a search term you might want to rank a product for. When I search for “stove top espresso makers” from Amazon’s home page, here’s the URL that we get, shown in the image below:
The actual way Amazon does calculate the Overall ranking though is a trade secret, so this is relying on reverse engineering changes seen after getting sales jumps/or doing free giveaways. And apparently there is also a dlooars per sale weighting in there, as in some cases fewer sales of a higher dollar book can push you up more than a lot of sales for a 0.99 book. Lastly, I am sure that Amazon reviews trends for this very closely and tweaks / adjusts their algorithims frequently to help guard against people gaming the system to their detriment.
Here are the top 500 sellers on the Amazon.es marketplace. The feedback shown is only that received from sales on the Spanish marketplace. The feedback data will vary from that in the global list above, for merchants selling to other European marketplaces using the same account.
“I love my new Paperwhite Kindle. I’ve been using an aging keyboard Kindle 2, waiting for a version with a built-in light like this. Amazon really got it right with the light on this one.” – Chad Bush, Amazon reviewer

With that said; I’ve would have to give ballpark of around 5-7% for seller feedback (even worse conversions for product reviews) averaging the highs and lows of niches, marketplaces, product quality, etc. etc… high end is about 20-23%.
Let’s move to Kindle bestsellers of 2017 so far. With the growing popularity of Kindle Unlimited this list will be increasingly dominated by the titles that are most popular among Amazon’s ebook subscribers.
(Publisher: Ubisoft) — Ubisoft lands a one-two punch at the top of the midyear sales list with this hack-and-slash fighting game that pitted Vikings against samurais against knights. While the multiplayer elements faced some criticism, fans appreciated that the game rewarded patience, rather than letting people simply mash buttons on their controller randomly and still win fights.
I decided my foot was worthy of the “Transpersonal” category under psychology books and “Freemasonry & Secret Societies” category under social sciences books. I’ve always wanted to have an affiliation with the Freemasons.

OK we have now updated all the data – global, Europe and all the countries. I think we have picked up a lot of the missing sellers and additional marketplaces for sellers with unified European accounts.
That’s right — if a free book is ‘sold’, it’s weighted just the same as if a buyer forked over cash for the same title. The only thing, then, that matters is how many of whatever title have been snapped up, and that number in turns becomes part of the algorithm used to calculate the sales rank.

Amazon’s list of its best sellers of 2017 is dominated by Nintendo, which took seven of the top ten slots, according to Amazon. Those games were flanked by another long-time gaming franchise in Call of Duty. And Sony was able to find its way into the Top 10 with Horizon Zero Dawn, one of the year’s most compelling—and good-looking—games.
Thanks for the great comments, Ed! It’s difficult to say just how useful this tanking actually is- whether it’s more for vanity, or whether it actually has some real bearing on revenue and sales etc, but it’s interesting to look at it in more detail though 🙂
Absolutely, it will overrate some and underrate others. However, it is comprehensive and transparent and, I believe, the best possible without making a lot of shaky assumptions on average feedback rates, sales prices etc. etc. So I prefer to keep it simple, and be upfront about the source of the data and its shortcomings.
Along similar lines, if your product is selling a steady one unit per day, but some of your competitors start to sell more than you, then your rank will fall (i.e. the number will get higher), even if your sales remain steady.
“How does this tablet rank against the competition? There are really only two other tablets in its class currently: the Google Nexus 7 and the just-announced Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display.” – NF, Amazon reviewer
