Last week Facebook IPO rumors swirled about the Internet. Few in the tech world were able to focus on anything else. Facebook’s estimated $75-$100 billion IPO had tech-meisters and analysts drooling. Finally, the world’s largest social network decided to put a price on everyones’ personal data.
Amazon has various ways of ranking products, but one of the least understood seems to be the Amazon Bestsellers Rank (also known simply as ‘Sales Rank’). This post will hopefully help you understand , as a customer, which books are selling well in a certain topic, and as a seller, which products may be your main competitors.
In the span of one day, Michael Wolff’s bombshell book about President Donald Trump and his administration, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, moved 48,448 positions up on Amazon’s best-seller list to reach the no. 1 spot. As of 10:00 a.m. EST on Thursday, it has retained its status. (The book is still in pre-order stages; it will be released on Jan. 9.)
County Sheriffs restrain Randall Margraves, the father of three daughters who were abused by Larry Nassar, after he tried to attack the former team USA Gymnastics doctor who pleaded guilty in November 2017 to sexual assault charges, during victim statements of his sentencing in the Eaton County Circuit Court in Charlotte, Michigan.
There’s probably a lot of variance in the % of buyers who leave seller feedback. Amazon’s own statistic of 10%-20% does feel high though. I’m hoping to get data on it sometime and might be interesting to see if it varies by country, category etc.
Nicolaos Solis from Greece kisses the wooden cross which was thrown into the waters by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, during the Epiphany ceremony to bless the waters at the Golden Horn in Istanbul.
This isn’t about how The New York Times list is biased (though it is). This isn’t about how authors buy their way onto various national best-seller lists by buying their own books in bulk (though they do). No, this is about the far more insidious title of “Amazon Bestseller”—and how it’s complete and utter nonsense.
Jeff Bezos is a snowy white beard and an arctic fulfilment depot away from being crowned a living Santa Claus, with his Amazon retail empire once again placing itself at the centre of holiday shopping in the US.

“Full Life Span, Four Years. […] This kindle fire was used everyday for reading books and for a lot of game use in it’s last year of life. A dedicated little tablet that deserves five stars.” – Gluten Free Mama, Amazon reviewer
Nintendo dominated! Of course, it wouldn’t be a list without Horizon Zero Dawn, which seems to be on everyone’s minds – including fellow developers. With a January Nintendo Direct slated for later on this month, we can’t help but to wonder what else the Big N has in store. The ranking above proves that the renewed interest is there, and we can’t wait to see what they do with this reacquainted momentum.
Perhaps most important, Chromecast isn’t restricted to a single platform. Although it’s produced by Google, Chromecast works for both iPhone/iPad and Android users, at least for the most part, which gives almost anyone with a smartphone, tablet or computer the opportunity to stream to their TV using devices they already know and use. In other words, there’s virtually no learning curve.
It gets better from there, too: the RAM is upgradeable to 32GB, meaning for just over $100 you can turn this thing into a heavy-hitting machine that can handle multi-tasking with ease. It’s also got two USB 3.0 ports and a USB-C connector for fast data transfer, an optical drive if you need one of those, and fast 802.11ac wireless.
“While this e-reader isn’t perfect, it’s pretty darned close. The backlighting was what convinced me I needed this upgrade to my perfectly serviceable, but aging, basic Nook. Among the other improvements were the higher resolution, which was noticeable but not awe-inspiring, the larger screen, and the integration into the Amazon marketplace. ” – zmonkey, Amazon reviewer

New York Times Bestsellers – Amazon runs special sections that feature the books that made it to weekly bestsellers lists by The New York Times. The NYT lists can be found in both print and Kindle sections. We link to the second directory, as it showcases the combined charts (print+ebook) for fiction and nonfiction.
(NOTE – While lowering the price is certainly a good strategy to rank higher, it is not always a good long-term business strategy. You do NOT want to compete on price alone, as this will only start a price war/race to the bottom)
“The secret to cracking the New York Times Best Sellers list is that they only compile the list based on certain stores that report their figures,” she explains. “The first question any book lover should ask when you go into a book store is, ‘Are you a New York Times reporting bookstore?'”
For example, we sell in multiple product categories and find that we receive proportionally more feedback in some categories. The dollar amount of the transaction also has a correlation to likelihood of feedback. Additionally, some items lend themselves to buying multiples while others do not. If a customer buys 5 units in one transaction, that will still lead to a maximum of one feedback.
It should be noted here that Amazon doesn’t have anything against selling cheap knockoffs. They just don’t like it when you lie about what it really is or who really made it. So, I’m not telling you this method because I condone it, but merely to keep you informed doesn’t Amazon seller. Someday it could happen to you! Know how to protect yourself from having your product listing hijacked.
While it isn’t clear exactly how many copies of a book must be sold to break into a slot on the list, a 2013 study of Amazon’s best-sellers list for a two-week period by Publishers Weekly found that “a title in Amazon’s top five averages 1,094 print copies sold across all channels, including other retailers, on a typical day.”
As you can see, this section of Amazon’s website is almost a department unto itself. Promotions are given their own unique links and listing pages. The part I’d like to draw your attention to is the Coupons link, highlighted in the blue box above. This page takes you to a list of Amazon’s most popular Vendor Powered Coupons (VPC) in a variety of categories. See the page for yourself below:
The reason people aspire to call themselves “bestselling author” is because it dramatically increases your credibility and “personal brand.” It can establish you as a thought leader. You’re able to show that you not only wrote a book, but that the market has judged it to be better than other books out there. It’s a status symbol, one of that cashes in on the prestige of one of man’s oldest past-times. At last, I had acquired this coveted title for myself.
I’ve been driven nearly to distraction that my BSR Category keeps getting placed incorrectly. The product category is correct, but instead of it showing BSR of Electronics, it shows BSR in Office Products.
