Amazon keeps a running tab of the best-selling items on its website. It’s a pretty comprehensive list with everything from video games to books to clothing. For example, the best-selling toys right now are rocket copters that you can fling into the air and the best-selling book is Hillbilly Elegy. The list gets updated each hour, so the items change frequently. But one list that rarely changes is the top-selling devices in the electronics section.
“There’s a lot of other factors and variables that indirectly contribute to BSR including but not limited to factors that also contribute to organic ranking on the SERP: total sales history, recent sales velocity, repricing, and advertising.”
According to Amazon, the Bestsellers Rank is calculated hourly, but sometimes there is a lag between an increase in sales, and an improvement in a ranking. This lag is usually no more than 2 or 3 hours, but there is some debate over exactly how many product rankings are calculated hourly. This article on WebProNews, mentions that, in the books category, only the top 10,000 books are calculated hourly, whereas books with a ranking of 10,000+ are calculated once per day with ‘current projections as well as historic sales information play[ing] a key role in calculations’.
Any industry person can tell you these lists have their problems. There’s a barely concealed editorial bias. Bookscan, the database that tabulates book sales, inexplicably doesn’t include Amazon’s ebook sales. There’s even the possibility of manipulation, as outlined in a 2013 Wall Street Journal article called “The Mystery of the Book Sales Spike.” Still, they remain relatively hard to crack. In most cases, your book not only has to be good enough for a legitimate publisher to publish it, but you have to outsell all the other books out there, past and present, even if you’re paying for it out of your pocket. We’ve had clients sell close to 10,000 copies in a single week and miss landing on these charts.
To bring everything we’ve learned about custom URL queries together, let’s say we wanted to bring up the search results page for the term “espresso maker” in the Kitchen & Dining category, filtered by the Breville brand. Here’s what the URL would look like:
Obviously, the year is not quite over just yet. So, unless a sudden monster comeback is mounted by Breath of the Wild, Call of Duty or Valkyria Revolution, it’s looking pretty snug that Mario will be spending Christmas celebrating his incredible success, alongside Peach, Yoshi and John Leguizamo.
The Echo Dot was the top-selling device across Amazon Books’ 13 stores; the Kindle Paperwhite was the best-selling Kindle; the TP-Link Smart Plug was the best-selling accessory; and WowWee Fingerlings were the top selling toy.

Along similar lines, if your product is selling a steady one unit per day, but some of your competitors start to sell more than you, then your rank will fall (i.e. the number will get higher), even if your sales remain steady.
From soaring to high heights and seeing great sights to being left in a Lurch on a prickle-ly perch, Dr. Seuss addresses life’s ups and downs with his trademark humorous verse and illustrations, while encouraging readers to find the success that lies within.
Just like with the &field-keywords= string, the only part of the URL necessary to tell Amazon to bring us to the “Kitchen & Dining” category is the &node= query, in this case &node=284507. So, if we wanted to link to this page, you could strip down the URL to this:
French President Emmanuel Macron observes a minute of silence in front of the plaque commemorating late police officer Ahmed Merabet to mark the third anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack, in Paris.
Hi. May I ask a question? I would like to find the best product to sell on Amazon. Therefore, I would like to see all items in a specific department. I read on a couple of websites to type after choosing the department, but this obviously doesn’t work. Do you know any alternative way to see all items in a specific department? That would be so helpful.
The best-selling luxury beauty item in the U.S. was the Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe Herbs and Rosewater, stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner and Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water, Cleansing and Make-Up Removing Solution.
“After having my fire for a few weeks I still have very few complaints. I pretty much carry it with me whenever I am out of the house. I love having the option to read or if there way available wi-fi watch a movie. I wish it came with 4G but I bet it would make the price out of line with other small tablets.” – NicoleReviewsItAll, Amazon reviewer
“Full Life Span, Four Years. […] This kindle fire was used everyday for reading books and for a lot of game use in it’s last year of life. A dedicated little tablet that deserves five stars.” – Gluten Free Mama, Amazon reviewer
It’s about time that readers—and the media, which breathlessly repeats the best-selling claims of these authors—wised up. So let me show you exactly how I became a became a #1 Amazon bestseller for $2 and a photo of my foot in less than five minutes (with screenshots and proof). Hopefully, as my partner Ryan has put it, once you understand how the sausage is made, you won’t want to eat it any more.
Midyear sales figures for the video game industry show two things — the staying power of hot holiday sellers and which spring releases have found a loyal audience. While the positions shift (and many titles fall off the charts) once the holiday months arrive, they’re a good barometer of publisher health.
(NOTE – While lowering the price is certainly a good strategy to rank higher, it is not always good long-term business strategy. You do NOT want to compete on price alone, as this will only start a price war/race to the bottom)
Those with a Kindle account frequently take advantage of downloading free e-books. Why do we mention this? Because when it comes to the best sellers rank, Amazon does not differentiate between free and not-free books.
Conny, I’m not sure, to be honest. Perhaps something to do with angorythm changes? Or simply your relation to others in your category, which can naturally change without your sales changing at all… so, if the sales in 50% of your category are fluctuating (which they are), this will naturally change your relative rank, even if your sales stay the same (even at 0)… In all, though, it’s impossible to tell for sure. Please let me know if you find out anything else!
