YouTube reflected on its banner year today, announcing that it served over 1 trillion playbacks in 2011. “That’s about 140 views for every person on the earth,” YouTube’s Rewind blog post says. YouTube saw record traffic and mobile growth this year. It gets 3 billion views per day, and video uploads have doubled since last year.
Rankings for this midyear list were taken from sales figures from January through the end of April, the most recent reporting period for market researcher The NPD Group. Due to agreements with publishers, NPD does not publicly release hard sales numbers — but the rankings show that players are eager for new experiences — while they’re not quite ready to let go of some old favorites.
Free Downloaded ebooks do NOT count equally as a paid sale. They may have a loooong time ago when the Kindle Slect program first started but for at least the last year or longer even a free giveaway downloaded only counts for about one tenth of a paid in overall/sub-category rankings.
Amazon’s best-selling list compiles a real-time selection of shoppers’ top products in each category, which are updated hourly. That means the products that are on this list won’t always be their best-sellers, but they were at one point!
We’re only halfway through 2017 right now so there’s plenty of time for another item to top Amazon’s electronics list. But if the past few years are any indication, the company may be on track for another year of having the best-selling item.

In a press release pushed out on December 26, to highlight its successes during the festive period, Amazon says it saw a big increase in the number of Prime trials being taken, a big bump in the number of people shopping from its mobile apps and, to sweeten the acerbic reception that greeted its ill-fated Fire Phone, big sales for its own-brand TV streaming devices.
Google might want to enjoy Chromecast’s sales leadership while it lasts. In the future, would-be customers could get put off if the wait for more compatible apps and streaming sources drags on. Before long, Chromecast may also have a new challenger: Amazon’s rumored streaming gadget. Possibly dubbed the Firetube, the device will reportedly launch in time for the holiday season.
