Hi Hutch, thanks for your comment. Do you have a link to a specific article which shows this? I agree that free vs paid has a massive bearing on movers/shakers, top 100 etc, but for the sales rank, the vast majority of data I’ve seen and experienced supports that the weighting between free and paid for this specific list is pretty equal- would love to see some quality evidence for the contraty though, and if I’m wrong, will be happy to change the article…

There was silver-edged news elsewhere for Google.  Buoyed by plenty of offers, incentives and discounts ahead of the main Christmas shopping period it’s perhaps not surprising to learn that the Chromecast remained a big xmas seller, albeit placing second to Amazon’s $39 ‘Fire TV Stick’.

According to author Melissa Walker, whose new book Unbreak My Heart — out since May 22 — is her sixth young adult novel, Amazon Ranking Obsession (A.R.O) lessens with time. “With my first book, I checked Amazon NONSTOP,” she admits. “Every other author kept telling me the ranking didn’t matter, but it was the only number I had access to, so it had the power to make my heart soar (or drop). Now, I’ll admit that I still check it, but only once or twice a month (really!).” Still, it’s hard to resist even a mysterious number, if it’s right there in print.

If you want a premium alternative, we’ve heard good things about MerchantWords (not an affiliate link), but keep in mind that these types of services don’t get their data from Amazon… At least not fully. They typically use a system that pulls data from major search engines, identifies matching queries in Amazon, and then use an algorithm to combine that data and give you estimated traffic numbers. Still may be worth checking out for some.

One of the top sellers you see in the list above is WayFair. As I was poking around Amazon, I noticed them showing up a ton in our searches. They have over 200,000 reviews and this seller clearly knows what they’re doing… Just about every item in their shop is winning its Buy Box. Getting Amazon reviews has to become systematic to generate sales.

As documentary filmmakers who have published both DVDs and books, my in-laws have experienced Amazon ranking firsthand. They informed me that my book had likely been assigned a number though it was only currently available for pre-order, but the numbers changed all the time, so I might as well wait to look. I could arguably head upstairs to my laptop and get a preliminary sense of the book’s standing immediately, but what was the point?

Give your VPCs out to friends and family in exchange for reviews/sales metrics. This is also an awesome hack, which most of our clients use with great success. You can set up a VPC and discount your product down to your total costs (so you’re not taking a loss on each sale, but breaking even). Then give this VPC out to friends and family, and have them buy it through Amazon on their own. Most people will be ecstatic to receive such a deeply discounted product, and you’ll get a ‘Verified Purchase’ review – as well as a boost in your initial sales data!

I read on a couple of websites to type [] after choosing the department, but this obviously doesn’t work. Do you know any alternative way to see all items in a specific department?
