Here are the top 500 sellers on the Amazon.co.jp marketplace. Amazon Japan is a special case, as its seller directory only lists “top sellers” rather than all sellers. I’d be interested to hear if anyone can shed some light on the accuracy of this data from Amazon.co.jp!
It used to be a real mark of distinction to hit the best-seller lists–because there were fewer lists and fewer authors (and before ebooks, pricing across books was pretty universal as well). The New York Times list been the most prestigious, published in one form or another since 1931. By 1942, a national list made its debut, compiled according to “reports from leading booksellers in 22 cities.” By the mid-2000s, over 4,000 bookstores were polled each week to determine who deserved to be on the list. The Wall Street Journal list, which has been around since 2009, is based on Nielsen Bookscan and tends to focus on a smaller number of categories. The USA Today list is also a prestigious but more of a catch-all list.

As such, we foresee that launching new products in “Electronics” section is going to be tough. As you might be aware, several established brands have a greater presence in the marketplace already and they won’t allow much room for the beginners. However, we can also notice that there are a large stream of new mobile cases and other smartphone accessories brands having entered the market now. The reason is that these are among the easiest categories of products to distinguish with choices of designs and colours. On the other hand, it’s also true that this reason is not enough to get recognised because there is simply too much of similar products and this differentiation factor is not sufficient.
Next I bought three of my books myself through the Amazon website and when I still saw no sales on my author page, and questioned them again, they stated again that there had been no sales. Now if this isn`t fishy I don`t know what is.
Regarding Andy’s comment; I think it’s a good base to go from seeing as how there isn’t much other data that Amazon is willing to make public. A few of the listed companies can probably shuffle around in hierarchy (if given 100% data) but I’d say for the general,.. those listed def earned to be “nominated” of making it on the list lol!
It would be interesting to see Amazon’s own accounts to see how they rank against the rest of us… even if you list them with an asterisk… would they take the top four spots or is there a top seller 3rd party that does better than the host?
They also package poorly…so your purchase will no doubt look like road kill by the time you get it…and they lie about condition of product (outright lies or instead of condition they state they have thousands of satisfied customers…then you get some smelly, torn up product).
I’m pretty sure you’re missing a class of sellers. These are both long-time Amazon Sellers that I’ve had experience buying from and both are missing from your list but clearly have the feedback scores to make it.
I was hooked. It didn’t matter the numbers could be meaningless because they accounted for only one bookseller or because I couldn’t be sure in relationship to what I was being ranked. It didn’t matter that the numbers were as fleeting as my recent obsession with chocolate mint gum, which ended when I tasted it.
Lewis’s novel was first published in 1935. The publisher, Penguin, calls it a story about the fragility of democracy: “Written during the Great Depression, when the country was largely oblivious to Hitler’s aggression, it juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a president who becomes a dictator to save the nation from welfare cheats, sex, crime, and a liberal press.”
I didn’t write this to make my foot famous. I wrote this post because I’m tired of vanity titles and success without quality. I also wanted to show how simple it is to call yourself a best-selling author, in the hopes that people buying books become more discerning customers. Remember, if I can make my foot a “bestselling author” for under 3 dollars and a few minutes of work, you should take any person presenting themselves as such with a grain of salt.
I think the variation in feedback rates is fascinating. Some sellers like Pete below do report up to 20% while others just get feedback on 2-3% of sales like you. It seems to vary by country, but I’m guessing product category, price and other factors also play a part.
The book’s robust standing at no. 1 on Amazon’s best-seller list is particularly impressive and noteworthy since it primarily consists of commercial paperbacks and popular hardcover fiction. No other work of political analysis or reporting ranks in the top 50, as of 10:00 a.m. EST on Thursday.

“I bought this in December 2013 and I use it daily as the extra storage for my music and photos in my phone (currently an Xperia Z5C). No performance issues at all. I do really recommend this micro SD card.” – Paco Hernandez, Amazon reviewer
Having regularly checked the special promotions on Amazon over the holidays, some of the HP Stream laptops were offered as low as $179. You would think this very good deal would result in big sales numbers, but evidently not enough to outsell the top Chromebooks on Amazon.
