It used to be a real mark of distinction to hit the best-seller lists–because there were fewer lists and fewer authors (and before ebooks, pricing across books was pretty universal as well). The New York Times list has been the most prestigious, published in form or another since 1931. By 1942, a national list made its debut, compiled according to “reports from leading booksellers in 22 cities.” By the mid-2000s, over 4,000 bookstores were polled each week to determine who deserved to be on the list. The Wall Street Journal list, which has been around since 2009, is based on Nielsen Bookscan and tends to focus on a smaller number of categories. The USA Today list is also a prestigious but more of a catch-all list.
Currently, according to Amazon’s own best sellers section on its site, the Echo Dot in black is now the top-selling electronics device in the U.S., followed by the Echo Dot in white and then the white Echo. Various Fire tablets, the Kindle Paperwhite and the Fire TV Stick with remote round out the top 10.
For comparison’s sake, Amazon Prime Day 2016 had led to a 3x increase in Amazon device sales, including a 2.5x increase in U.S. sales for its Echo speaker. It seems we’re on track to surpass those increases this year.

What most sellers forget is that Amazon only charges on the sale of the item. Unlike Ebay or PPC where it is a pure gamble unless you know what you are doing. I would however add caution to ensure offline and other sales channels are also utilised and not rely 100% on Amazon sales.
According to Amazon, the Bestsellers Rank is calculated hourly, but sometimes there is a lag between an increase in sales, and an improvement in a ranking. This lag is usually no more than 2 or 3 hours, but there is some debate over exactly how many product rankings are calculated hourly. This article on WebProNews, mentions that, in the books category, only the top 10,000 books are calculated hourly, whereas books with a ranking of 10,000+ are calculated once per day with ‘current projections as well as historic sales information play[ing] a key role in calculations’.

What this also means is that a book that’s ranked 800,000 can see it’s rankings skyrocket to 200,000 just with a couple of sales. As you move up the ladder, however, Amazon’s complex algorithm kicks in soon thereafter making it harder for you to break through the 100,000 milestone, and even harder to get past 10,000. This is because these higher rated products have historical data to back them up, so a lull in sales for them won’t result in as dramatic a drop in rankings as it would for a new product with less data to draw on. In all, the ranking seems to be somewhat logarithmic.
You’ll see what’s currently getting the most sales in the main categories of Amazon, but since your niche site probably isn’t as broad as “Toys and Games” or “Electronics,” you’ll need to dig a little deeper.
Lousy Sales Ranks: This isn’t always or necessarily indicative of a bad-buy item, but only if you do it right. If you’re smart about it, like avoiding items with tons of competing offers, then you have the chance to make nice cushy profits.
