Easy – invest in a tool that automatically reprices your products so that you always stay on top of the Buy Box. This is almost a requirement when you have lots of products for sale; there’s just no way to stay on top of pricing for all of them.

As you can tell from the list above, the best selling games were a bit dominated by Nintendo, but a couple of PlayStation hits did crack into the top 5, as Horizon Zero Dawn and the ever popular Call of Duty: WWII sold well enough to give itself a spot on the best sellers of 2017. For a look back at Horizon Zero Dawn, make sure to check out our review of the game below:
While Google hasn’t yet opened up product distribution outside the U.S., earlier this week, Amazon indicated that it would ship the device to select international destinations. Shoppers in Europe, Asia and Australia reported success in ordering the device. But now, Amazon’s Chromecast product listing reads: “Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S. and to APO/FPO addresses.”
While it isn’t clear exactly how many copies of a book must be sold to break into a slot on the list, a 2013 study of Amazon’s best-sellers list for a two-week period by Publishers Weekly found that “a title in Amazon’s top five averages 1,094 print copies sold across all channels, including other retailers, on a typical day.”
“This is a very nice and lightweight cover that goes above and beyond what previous versions of Amazon-branded e-Ink Kindle covers have done: it is super-compact, lightweight, and holds the Paperwhite about as snug and secure as you can imagine.” – Michael Gallagher, Amazon reviewer
I suspected that I was not alone in my obsession. There are even sites like Sales Rank Express and Novel Rank that aim to cull tracking for authors, domestically and internationally. So, I reached out to two novelist buddies with new books out and asked about their relationship to the ranking system. Was I the only crazy one? “In one instance, I knew that 10 copies of [my book] were going to be purchased on Amazon,” explains Jennifer Miller, author of debut novel The Year of The Gadfly (out since May 8). “Out of curiosity, I checked the ranking before and after the sale. To my surprise, the ranking temporarily got worse. It’s a mystery!” She also reports fluctuations in one day from 100,000 to 7,000 and says that, according to her publisher, early sales information suggests that the book is selling best at independent bookstores. Wait, independent bookstores actually sell books? I thought they were a dying breed, almost as elusive as unicorns? Turns out that they still play an important role, thank goodness.

This is my method for buying on Amazon (eBay in disguise), eBay, Abes: ask questions before sale about packing, when product will really be sent, do they provide tracking, have they described condition, what is their feedback like (go back and see how many people are dissatisfied each day for a month or so…tedious, but if you have people every day saying you screwed up, something’s wrong), do they respond to emails and do they answer the questions asked?
23andMe is another service that rarely sees a substantial discount. While it might come as a surprise amidst all the tech, knowing your background isn’t just interesting, it can also help anticipate your health.
Since customer reviews obviously affect sales, I guess that my question has to do with Sales Rank, so here it is: if a review is posted on my sales page in one Amazon store (e.g. UK or, say, Italy) will it automatically appear on all other Amazon sales pages for book, including Amazon.com?
This works because the process Amazon uses to identify and spend misleading sellers is extremely cumbersome. The seller whose listing is being illegitimately piggybacked has to order one of the suspected counterfeit seller’s products to prove that it is indeed a different product.
“While this e-reader isn’t perfect, it’s pretty darned close. The backlighting was what convinced me I needed this upgrade to my perfectly serviceable, but aging, basic Nook. Among the other improvements were the higher resolution, which was noticeable but not awe-inspiring, the larger screen, and the integration into the Amazon marketplace. ” – zmonkey, Amazon reviewer
“There’s a lot of other factors and variables that indirectly contribute to BSR including but not limited to factors that also contribute to organic ranking on the SERP: total sales history, recent sales velocity, repricing, and advertising.”
According to author Melissa Walker, whose new book Unbreak My Heart — out since May 22 — is her sixth young adult novel, Amazon Ranking Obsession (A.R.O) lessens with time. “With my first book, I checked Amazon NONSTOP,” she admits. “Every other author kept telling me the ranking didn’t matter, but it was the only number I had access to, so it had the power to make my heart soar (or drop). Now, I’ll admit that I still check it, but only once or twice a month (really!).” Still, it’s hard to resist even a mysterious number, if it’s right there in print.
“The scale is very accurate. I stepped on and off multiple times, and always got the same number. Then I put on a light jacket, stepped on again, and it was up .6 pounds. Perfect!” – Elizabeth, Amazon reviewer
Lenovo has crafted a brilliant, forward-thinking device that could very well create a subcategory in computing all of its own. The modest specs hold it back from taking on the big boys in terms of raw power, but the innovative digital touchpad keyboard and drawing surface look like trendsetters to us. The Android version is currently about $100 cheaper than the Windows one (click “see all prices” above to see all options).
If you are selling over $10,000 a month online and are currently international or plan to go international, “reply to me” and tell me generically about your business, yourself, monthly units and monthly sales. Sincere replies will be invited to our “International Fulfillment Mastermind”.
There’s plenty of cross-border trading going on, but still many who are sticking to just one marketplace (or using separate accounts to sell on each). 46% of the 500 biggest sellers in Europe get all their feedback from only one marketplace (51% last year).
To me, intel is a greater problem than m$ – m$ has become irrelevant outside their sphere of influence but intel can buy their way into other markets as well, with their ill gotten loot and strong arm tactics.
There were other interesting nuggets of information in the Amazon press release, including the list of top-selling tablets. While it’s no surprise that Amazon’s own tablets made the top three list given heavy promotions, it is interesting that the Kindle Fire 7 bested the Kindle Fire 6 and the Kindle Fire HDX 7. Note that the top three are all smaller tablets. Buyers liked the 7-inch size in particular.
Thanks for the great comments, Ed! It’s difficult to say just how useful this tanking actually is- whether it’s more for vanity, or whether it actually has some real bearing on revenue and sales etc, but it’s interesting to look at it in more detail though 🙂
To show you what’s going on behind the scenes when you use Amazon, let’s by looking at the URL for a search term you might want to rank a product for. When I search for “stove top espresso makers” from Amazon’s home page, here’s the URL that we get, shown in the image below:
